A roadside memorial honoring the person, persons or family that died while driving, Highway 3, Sonora, Baja, California, Mexico
Memorials For Those Who Have Died on the Road In Baja, there are memorials for those killed on the road everywhere. There are many reasons. Poorly maintained roads, driving too fast, driving under the influence, and just a general lack of personal safety standards. As you drive by, it's easy to overlook them. After a while, they just seem to be part of the landscape. They just blur together and the meaning for their existence becomes a moot point. It's a sobering thought to remember that each cross, each little building, the religious statues, candles and flowers were put there in tribute to the deceased. To somebody at some time in the past who became a victim in the vast wasteland that is Baja. Men, women, boys and girls. All of whom have perished. Their lives a bright light snuffed in a dark instant before they even were aware of their last breath. When you drive down the street or highway, whether in Baja or anywhere else in the world. When you pass a highway memorial, the brightly colored alters, the fading paint of the little buildings holding them. As you streak by take a quick second to acknowledge that each memorial you pass represents a person, sometimes a family, who died there. A simple memorial. Their only tangible link to this world, and the memories of those who lost them.
