Night view of the legendary old stone arched bridge of Arta, crossing Arachtos river. Epirus, Greece

Among the dozens of old stone bridges of Greece, this one, the bridge of Arta, crossing river Arachthos, is the most famous. Connected with legends, fairy tales and folk ballads, it seems that for a long time, the construction of this bridge was the "Epopee of failure". Some lyrics from a folk ballad, just to get the idea: "Masters forty five and apprentices sixty a bridge they were building at the river of Arta once All day they built it, and in the evening it collapsed." . The solution was to sacrifice the headmaster's wife, who, according to the legend and the song, was "built in" or "walled up" (immurement) in the bridge!!!
