As atMiigcyer, it usually lay on the left side, with the fingerbones before the face. A common baked clay plate was VAULTS AND THEIR CONTENTS. 253 placed on either side, with jars and vases of variousforms. Some of the latter are exceedingly elegant, par-ticularly one of convolvulus shape, which is commonlymet with at Sinkara, and appears to be the type of themodern drinking kuja used at Baghdad. A few of theforms of pottery peculiar to these ruins are engraved inthe accompanying woodcut. In one vault, the bones of. Pottery from Sinkara. several other skeletons were heaped up in the corners,evidently for the purpose of giving place to the lastdeposited body, Avhich occupied the centre of the armlet lay in the right uj)per corner, and a large jarnear the right foot contained a small tooth-comb, madeof bone. Among the dust was a rude wdiite cylinder,and an onyx bead, with a rudely engraved figureupon it. In another vault was the skeleton of a tall large-bonedman. With the bones of the feet lay two copper rings,and near the chest a small laj)is-lazuli frog, and a coupleof agate beads. On the left of the body were five knuckle-bones of sheep, and a copper dish ; on the right were twobeautiful heart-shaped red vases.
