Atthe commencement of the war of the Rebellion he enteredthe volunteer service as a private in the Seventy-first NewYork Militia, April 19, 1861; was promoted color-sergeantApril 21, and with the regiment proceeded to Annapolis,Maryland, and marched to Washington City, April 25,when he did duty at the navy-yard until June 21, when hewas discharged to accept the appointment of fust lieu-tenant in the Twelfth U. S. Infantry, to date from May14, 1861. He was on duty at Fort Hamilton, New York, organ-izing Company IX First Battalion, Twelfth Infantry,from July 6, 1861, to March 5, 1862, when ordered tojoin the Army of the Potomac in the field. He thenserved in the Infantry Reserve to May, 1862, when at-tached to First Brigade, Second Division, Fifth ArmyCorps, to latter part of Ju
