Shearer, the adage hardly applies in his case, forhe was just in the prime of life—his work only half done. It will be recalled that Professor Shearer was veryactive in the American Roentgen Ray Society. In fact, heserved as chairman of the Committee on Safety. Althoughthe report of this committee is as yet unpublished, it wascompleted shortly prior to his death and will remain as atribute to his untiring industry and far sighted JOHN F. SHEARER When physicists were needed for military service inthe recent war, Professor Shearer volunteered and was madeChief Technical Consultant to the X-ray Division, AmericanExpeditionary Forces. His services in France were of untoldvalue to the American army. His position as Professor of Physics at Cornell Uni-versity gave him an opportunity to carry out much researchwork in the field of x-rays. His last work was the perfectionof a bedside unit, which is proving highly satisfactory. Heco-operated with Dr. W. D. Coolidge in perfecting theportable army unit, which proved so valuable in the recentwar and which was responsible for the statement made bymany that the X-ray Division of the American ExpeditionaryForces was the best equipped of any force in the field.
