Mars has attracted much interest in scientific and fictional areas. Historical observers believed Mars was teeming with life, and popular fiction has reflected this. It has since been shown Mars is cold and almost certainly lifeless. Patches of carbon dioxide frost can be seen in between the boulders on the surface. A landing on Mars would be a symbolic step in the exploration of Space.
