Earlys movement soalarmed the Federal gov-ernment for the safety ofWashington that a force of forty thousandmen, ten thousand of which were the splen-did cavalry of Sheridan, was stationed in thevalley, and Major-General Sheridan was ap-pointed to the command of this army. HadGrant been able to retain these troops withhis own army, it is safe to say that Lee would have been forced to abandon his position atPetersburg in the autumn of 1864. Theirabsence in the valley enabled the Con-federate leader to prolong his defence throughthe winter. As soon as he had gotten his forces wellin hand, Sheridan advanced upon Early, and. GENERAL S.
