Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park, Bláskógabyggð, southwestern Iceland


Þingvellir (Thingvellir), means 'Thing Fields'. It is located in Bláskógabyggð in southwestern Iceland, near the peninsula of Reykjanes and the Hengill volcanic area. Þingvellir is a site of historical, cultural, and geological importance and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Iceland and visited as part of the 'Golden Circle'. It is situated in a rift valley at the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where the Eurasion and North American tectonic plates separate. Parliament (Alþingi) was founded at Þingvellir in 930 and remained there until 1798. Þingvellir National Park was founded in 1930.
