Black garden ant (Lasius niger) head, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This ant is found throughout Europe, Asia and parts of North America. Like other ants, it has two long antennae (one seen) on its head, used for tasting chemicals to detect food and follow trails left by other ants. It also has two compound eyes (red, one seen). Its jaws are at bottom left. Magnification: x140 when printed 10cm wide.
