Fomalhaut Dust Ring, Exoplanet Candidate

The narrow dust ring around the bright star Fomalhaut. Peach at top is the ALMA image, and the blue at bottom is Hubble Space Telescope image. The star is at the location of the bright gold emission at the center of the ring. Fomalhaut (Alpha Piscis Austrini, Alpha PsA) is the brightest star in the constellation Piscis Austrinus and one of the brightest stars in the sky. It is a class A star on the main sequence approximately 25 light-years ( pc) from Earth. Fomalhaut holds a special significance in extrasolar planet research, as it is the center of the first stellar system with an extrasolar planet candidate (Fomalhaut b) imaged at visible wavelengths.
