Diagnostic knee and knee-cap X-rays. Set of five X-rays of a human knee joint, used to help diagnose joint conditions and injuries. The knee is shown from the side (lateral view) at left, and from the front (anterior view) at right. Across bottom are three views of the articulation between the femur (thigh bone) and the patella (knee-cap). The knee is a mobile hinge joint (ginglymus) formed by the articulation of the femur, patella and the tibia (larger of the two lower leg bones). In the image at upper right, the femur is at top, the tibia at lower left, and the fibula at lower right. The knee joint can flex and extend, and is also capable of slight internal and external rotation.
