Computer monitor opened to show its cathode ray tube (CRT, centre). The CRT produces an image by directing electrons at the screen. The copper windings (steering coils) focus the electrons using a magnetic field. As the electrons hit the back of the screen, which is coated in phosphor, it glows. The electrons are produced by a heated filament (cathode, not seen). The CRT is also employed to produce images in a television.
