The bark is smooth, thin, % thickor less, light gray, fissured with surface scales. Small trees with alternate, simple, entire leaves, milky juiceand axillary thorns. 1. Toxylon pomiferum Raf. Osage Orange. A smallthorny tree which may reach a height of 50°-60° w^ith trunkdiameter of 2°-3°, but usually smaller. Bark 2/3-l thickwith broad rounded ridges, somewhat shreddy, brown. Thespines are about % long, and produce painful wounds. Theleaves are ovate lanceolate, entire, long pointed, smooth, andglossy green above, 3-5 long, 2-3 wide.
