Limestone cliff rockfall. This pile of rocks formed from a rockfall as the action of wind, rain and waves eroded this limestone cliff, weakening sections until they broke away and fell to the base of the cliff. Limestone is a sedimentary rock formed from calcium minerals such as calcium carbonate. The layered nature of sedimentary rocks is clearly seen here, with horizontal strata (layers) visible in the cliff face. This limestone formed from minerals in the shells of marine organisms accumulating on the bed of an ancient sea millions of years ago. Photographed on the Glamorgan coastline, South Wales.
