Sir Ferdinand Gorges and John Mason weregranted a patent for the region called Laconia, whichwas the whole country between the sea, the river, the Merrimac, and the Kennebec rivers, lands nowpartly in Maine and partly in New Hampshire. Colonies were estab-lished at Portsmouth, Dover, and two or three other places, but they weremore like trading posts than settlements, and in 1643 Portsmouth didnot have more than fifty or sixty families, replied Charlie.
