The fort, built in 1833, has a heavy armamentand modern defenses, which would render it a real protection tothe city in case of an attempted invasion. It has a strong torpedoarmament. To the east and northeast of Georges Island, further down theharbor are other islands. Just north of the main ship channel, atthe entrance to the harbor, is Brewsters Island, on which isBoston Light. Beyond Fort Warren the steameris soon at Pembertons Landing, in the town of Hull. Hull, of which Nantasket forms a part, is now a busy sum-mer resort with hotels, cottages, and yacht clubs. On TelegraphHill, which has been seen from the steamer, are the remains of afort planned by Lafayette and also a United States government bat-tery. From Point Allerton there is a fine view of the harbor andocean. From Hull the steamer follows an inland channel to Nan-tasket Beach, though many prefer to leave the steamer at Hull andproceed to Nantasket by trolley. Nantasket Beach is about four miles long. It is one of thefinest beaches on the Atlantic coast. The shore on the seawardside offers unexcelled opportunities for bathing, while its inland sideis a fine place for boating.
