In December, we gave our first reception, which made us feel our importance at May came our Senior Play which, though it caused us hard work, nevertheless brought muchpleasure. SHAWSHEEN RIVER X 13 Looking Backward and Forward THE class of nineteen hundred and four can hardly realize that it is seventy-five years sinceAbbot Academy was founded. If we could go back to the early days of Abbot we should findthat there have been great changes: but the purpose of the noble men and women who startedthe school has always continued. That purpose was to develop the character of young women in theright direction and to fit them for useful lives in the world. To Madam Abbot we owe a great deal. It was by her financial aid that the men who wished tofound a school in Andover for the education of women were enabled to carry out their purpose. In1829 Abbot Hall was built. Facing School Street, with its perfect Ionic columns, it must have beenan imposing building to the first Fem-Sems. The girls boarded in houses near the school until SmithHall was built in lSo-t. This building, now closed on account of its age, means very little to us to
