Prostate diagnostic surgery. Image 5 of 8. Surgeon performing a TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate) biopsy procedure. The prostate is a small gland found just below the bladder in men. A biopsy is a tissue sample that is taken in order to diagnose an abnormality. During TURP, prostate tissue is excised using a cystoscope (a type of endoscope), flushed out of the body into containers, and then separated from the fluid. TURP is often used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that can restrict urination.
