But the native paintings that throw light on their domestichabits and habitations, are the most interesting; for they show that an air of comfort,of home, pervaded their dwelUngs: matted floors, crockery and basket ware, habitualapplication of the broom, hearths, cooking utensils, spinning, weaving, childrens cradlesin various forms, carved seats, artificial flowers, &c., are very expressive. The ordinarydress of women and girls within doors, moreover, indicates a marked advance in civili-zation. Then how much is there to commend in their enforcement of householdindustry; though, to our ideas, it was inculcated on girls at too early an age.
