The principal work of the first of the two locomotivesconsists in shifting cars in and out of the northern divisionof the Sulhvan Square shops for the purpose of wheel grind-ing or truck changing. About forty-eight pairs of wheelsare ground daily, and the locomotive is constantly at worktransferring cars to and from the special track in the shopswhich is served by an elevator connecting with the machineshop on the ground floor. Ever since electric train opera-tion began in Boston it has been necessary to shift dead carsby a passenger car withdrawn from service.
