Klatzmann. Portrait of Professor David Klatzmann in 1994, French AIDS researcher at the Immunology Laboratory of the CNRS (La Pitie Salpetriere Hospital) in Paris. Here, Klatzmann is seen with cell cultures infected with the AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) virus. Klatzmann is involved in developing a gene therapy for AIDS. The therapy involves T-cells of the human immune system which are attacked by the AIDS virus. A gene may be inserted into T-cells which codes for the enzyme thymidine kinase (TK). These T-cells, when attacked by the virus, produce TK. The enzyme allows the drug acyclovir to target and kill these infected cells, also killing the AIDS virus.
