William Snyder Eichelberger (1865-1951), US astronomer. Eichelberger studied at Johns Hopkins University, receiving his doctorate in astronomy in 1891. He spent most of his career at the US Naval Observatory and Nautical Almanc Office in Washington DC, starting work there in 1896. He became a professor of mathematics in the military and reached the rank of captain in 1920. From 1910, he was Director of the Nautical Almanc Office, holding that post until his retirement in 1929. He then worked for the Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York. His other work included taking part in solar eclipse expeditions, and compiling standard star catalogues. This photograph dates from the period 1905 to 1945.
