Discusses visiting Charles Brown's ladye love, Charlotte Kidder, and hearing her play piano. Transcription: 31. Thursday. Hurried to the Era Office before business. Saw ?ǣTom Frank, ? left block and then to Office. There all day as usual, rushing to and from [177] Canal at dinner. Called again at the Era Office, and got paid. Evening at work on daguerrotype picture, [Alfred] Waud present, as usual. November. 1 Friday. Office, as usual, from 8 till 6. Met Joe [Greatbatch] and Mr [Frank] Royal in Chatham Street. Evening drawing, matagrabolized enow. 2 Saturday. Yesterday repeated, as near as I can call to mind. 3. Sunday. Drawing ineffectually all the dull and dreary day, from the daguerrotype. Waud present all time. 4. Monday. Office. Evening Joe calleth, and in conjunction with [Charles] Brown and Waud ale is discussed. I at work, and splenetic. 5. Tuesday. Office. I like [Charles F.] Anderson intensely. How prone are we to weigh differing individuals in our own pithy conceit manufactured scales. And how wrong was I to put down his rough impulsive, business like, droll, rollicking humor as vulgar. Evening, in accordance with an intimation of Charley ?s, off with him up Broadway to one of the Avenues, (imbibing a brandy toddy by the way.) Arrived at the domicile enshrining his ladye love [Charlotte Kidder], she herself openeth the door. A glorious little creature, with large, bright black eyes and dark hair curling all round her head. The feature she would not be considered handsomex, but when seated at the pianoforte, her face was lit up by the pleasure of imparting pleasure to us, she was absolutely beautiful. She sung to us, again and again, and thus the evening passed most pleasantly. A more impulsive, exquisitely natural little creature I have never seen, and when shaking hands at parting I could fain have said ?ǣNow may God bless you! ? with all my heart. An exultant scamper back to Canal and bed. [footnote] x A most decided, outrageous, unqualified blunder.
