Chantal Kowalski (left) and Jean-Michel Claverie, researchers in medical genomics and bioinformatics. They led a team of French scientists which discovered pandoraviruses in 2013, in estuary water from Chile, and pondwater from Australia. Pandoraviruses infect amoebas, and are close to 1 micrometre in size. They have the largest genome among all known viruses. Much of their DNA appears to have little recognizable relationship with genes from other known organisms.
