Fish fossil. Rock containing a fossil (brown) of a Dapalis macrurus fish. The tail is at left, and the head is at right, and the skeleton and fins are clearly seen. This extinct fish was found in rocks dating from the Oligocene epoch (34 to 23 million years ago). Fossils appear as rock slowly forms around objects buried in mud. As the rock forms, the shape and anatomy of buried animals and plants can be preserved. Fossils of this fish can be found in France.
