William Thomas Brande (1788-1866), English chemist. Brande was born in London, and educated at Westminster School. He was apprenticed to his brother, an apothecary, during which time he studied chemisty. He was appointed professor of chemistry to the Apothecaries’ Society in 1812, and succeeded Davy at the Royal Institution. Brande wrote books on chemistry that achieved popular success. From 1823 he became interested in the chemistry and mechanics of coining, eventually being a superintendent at the Royal Mint.
