Roof collapses at the First Roumanian-American Synagogue

Because of previously detected water damage the roof collapses at the First Roumanian-American Synagogue at 89-93 Rivington Street on the Lower East Side on January 22, 2006 . The 150 year old synagogue was determined to have structural damage several weeks ago and was closed at the time to worshippers so there were no injuries. The enormous synagogue was known as the Cantor's Carnegie Hall because of the many famous cantors that performed there. Many of the synagogues of the Lower East Side suffer from dwindling congregations and are struggling to make ends meet. (© Frances M. Roberts)
