Senebardo's catacomb from Palazzolo Acreide. Sicily


The hypogeum known as the Cave of Senebardo is an imposing catacomb relating to the period of Byzantine domination (VI - IX ) when the ancient city of Akrai was a very important center. The Hypogeum consists of a central room in an ancient cistern and is surrounded by numerous rock-cut tombs, many of which canopy with columns spared. Some graves have a monumental structure with architectural friezes worthy of burial gifts or illustrious personages of the time. There are numerous in greek inscriptions along the walls as well as the traces left by travelers and peasants in past centuries. Senebardo name is engraved on one of the monumental canopies. The catacomb probably underwent some subsequent amendments especially in expanding the environment central maybe used later as a place of worship prayer.
