It opened before us, nevertheless, andpresently we were cruising in the Magalloway, a river narrower thanthe Androscoggin, and hemmed in, not by dead trees, but by walls ofliving green. It is not a rude wilderness; all the northern woodshave of foliage, verdurous, slender, delicate, tremulous, overhung ourshadowy path, dense as the vines that drape a tropic stream.
