New recruits of India Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, stand at attention during receiving at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Dec. 15. The position of attention is one of the first things recruits learn when they get off the bus and step onto the yellow footprints. They are instructed to keep their arms to the sides, their thumbs on their trousers seams, their heels together and their head and eyes straight to the front. Today, all males recruited from west of the Mississippi are trained at MCRD San Diego. The depot is responsible for training more than 16,000 recruits annually.
