Christian herald and signs of our times . a very diffi-cult task to secure actual evidence of participa-tion in the attack on the Parish , the correspondence between thisGovernment and Italy has greatly modified thesituation and removed all danger of the lynch-ing becoming an international question. There are Thousands of Idolators in Paris, where the worship of Buddha has spread to aremarkable extent. This is the latest vagary ofthe changeful capital, where vice and infidelityhave had their strongholds for generations. Itis certainly a singular commentary on the civil-ization of France that in the nineteenth cen-tury, the Buddhist sect, Sin-Sin, should haveits devotees in Paris, and its temples wherepriests from heathen Ceylon pray and prostratethemselves before a statue of Buddha and leadthe devotions of a mixed congregation, com-posed of Frenchmen, a few Englishmen and asprinkling of Orientals. The mummery includesthe burning of tapers in flower-filled vases, theoffering of incense, innumerable prostrations,. the striking of gongs to frighten off wickedspirits anil the singing or chanting of heathenhymns. Such a spectacle is possible in no othercivilized capital in the world ! Changes in the Character of the Tide of Im-migration flowing to this country from the oldworld are constantly taking place. Italy is con-sidering the advisability of prohibiting her sonsand daughters from coming to the UnitedStates; the Chinese have practically stoppedcoming, and now, we are inlormed that a greatJapanese influx is threatened. Thousands havealready arrived in California, and are laboringin the same vineyards where, a few years ago,the Chinese worked until driven away. Thesearrivals arc the precursors of many more thou-sands. They are really fine laborers, with thesame skill, delicacy and economy that markedthe Chinese, and which made the latter so pow-erful a competitor of the whites.
