Father Jerzy Popieluszko, 1947-1984, was a popular figure in the Polish Catholic Church. He was abducted, tortured and murdered by the members of the communist secret police for his political beliefs. His grave is located next to the church dedicated to St Stanislaus Kostka in the district of Zoliborz.
