[ 334 ]. SAMUEL ABBOT SMITH Lieutenant (), , Squadron Commander Air Station, Cape May, Son of George A. and Anna (Putnam) Smith; was born at Arling-ton, Mass., Dec. 9, 1895. He graduated from Milton Academy,Milton, and entered Harvard College with the class of 1918. Heleft college at the end of his junior year to enter the Service,having never received lower than honor grade during the threeyears of his attendance; was awarded Harvard College Scholar-ship, 1915-16, and 1918-19, and the John Harvard Scholarship,1916-17; he was awarded Detur in his junior year, and electedmember of Phi Beta Kappa. He played football, and held Harvardchampionship in wrestling (145 lb. class), in 1915. On July 16, 1917, he enrolled in (Aviation) at theCharlestown Navy Yard, and attended the Ground School, Nov. 24, he was sent to the Naval Air Station at HamptonRoads, Va., and on Jan. 10, 1918,
