Climbers descend ladders leading down onto the Mer De Glace from near the Montenvers railway station. The railway was built in Victorian times to take tourists up to the glacier, it has subsequently thinned 150 meters since 1820, and retreated by 2300 Metres. In order to access the glacier you now have to climb down over 100 metres on ladders.
