ANATOMY, HEAD
The head skeleton (in beige) includes the skull bones and the facial architecture.( For a global view and description of the head, see image no. 1140405.) Visible here, the ethmoid bone (D), the sphenoid (E), the two nasal bones (C), the two maxillae (G), the two palatine bones (H), the mandible (J), and the two inferior nasal conchae (c). These bones form cavities called the paranasal sinuses, including the frontal sinuses (a) and the sphenoid sinuses (b). The ethmoid bone forms two bony processes on each side of the nasal septum, known as the middle and superior nasal conchae (a and b respectively). These three pair of nasal conchae serve to filter inhaled air and detect odor molecules. The cerebral and vertebral structures visible here are described in detail in images no. 1140605 and 1140405, respectively. shown here: the corpus callosum (a, b), the septum lucidum, the fornix, the anterior commissure (7), the interventricular foramen (11), the optic chiasma (15), the hypophysis or pituitary gland (16), the mamillary body of the hypothalamus (17), the thalamus (II), and the pons (IV), in addition to the cervical vertebrae, including the Atlas (L) and the axis (M). The mouth (buccal or oral cavity) is the uppermost extremity of the digestive system. Opening and closing movements are made using the orbicularis oris muscle of the lips (g). The tongue's downward movements (l) are controlled by the genioglossis muscle (p). The palate, forming the roof of the mouth, is divided into an anterior bony part, the hard palate, formed by the maxillae (G) and the palatine bones (H), and a posterior fleshy area, the soft palate or velum, ending at the back of the throat with the uvula (i), which rises and lowers to selectively close the passageway to the nose during swallowing and to the mouth during breathing. Two lymphoid masses, the palatine tonsils (k), are located in the palatal region. The genohyoid muscle (m) and the mylohyoid muscle (n), attached to the mandible (J),
