Statue of Baldwin I Iron Arm (830s-879), Markgrave (Count) of Flanders, at the Blind Donkey Street in Bruges, Belgium


This photo : The Old Civil Registry, situated on Burg Square, was built between 1534 and 1537 in Renaissance style. A statue of Count (Markgrave) Baldwin I Iron Arm (830s-879) with two ladies by his side tops the archway at the rear of the Old Civil Registry Archway at the Donkey Street (Blinde Ezelstraat) in Bruges, Belgium Baldwin I (probably 830s - 879), also known as Baldwin Iron Arm (the epithet is first recorded in the 12th century), was the first Margrave (count) of Flanders. At the time Baldwin first appear in the records he was already a count, presumably in the area of Flanders, but this is not known. Count Baldwin rose to prominence when he eloped with princess Judith, daughter of Charles the Bald, king of West Francia. Judith had previously been married to Aethelwulf and his son (from an earlier marriage) Aethelbald, kings of Wessex, but after the latter's death in 860, she returned to France.
