The basis of the present work is the English editionof Dr. Smith, pubUshed in 1840, the notes to whichare principally selected from the commentaries ofRuperti, Passow, and Walch. It has been the objectof the American editor to render these notes still moreuseful by additional selections from the works ofother scholars, and by a more frequent translation ofdifficult or obscure passages. One great defect in theEnglish edition is the omission of almost all specialreference to the authorities whence the notes havebeen obtained. The American editor has endeavor-ed to supply this deficiency, as far as lay in his power,more particularly in the commentary on the Germa-nia
