View N along the West Dart River to Wistman's Wood: two isolated patches of high altitude oak wood with ancient stunted trees surviving in moorland 427m above sea-level. Thought to date back to at least AD1700, the wood's survival is a mystery as is the fact that the trees are mainly pendunculate English oak (Quercus Robur) rather than the sessile oaks found elsewhere on Dartmoor.
