Battle of the Monitor and Merrimack, (or Virginia), March 8-9 1862, American Civil War. Also known as The Battle of Hampton Roads, the Battle of Ironclads, Battle of the Monitor and Virginia.

Illustration by Fred T. Jane (1865-1916) from The Life and Times of Queen Victoria published circa 1901. The reason for the use of 2 names in descriptions of the battle is that USS Merrimack had been burned by the government so it wouldn't fall into confederate hands, but was salvaged by the confederacy and renamed CSS Virginia. The battle is known variously as The Battle of Hampton Roads, the Battle of the Monitor and Merrimack (or Virginia) or the Battle of Ironclads
