Lana’i North Shore - Shipwreck Beach - Abandoned Navy Fuel Tanker YOGN-42

On the north shore of the Hawaiian Island of Lana’i, is a remote area known as Kaiolohia AKA Shipwreck Beach. It is an area of strong winds and rough seas. It is also a graveyard for ships that have been sunk here both accidentally and on purpose. The access is not paved so it is highly recommended that you rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle to go here. This spot has excellent views of Moloka’i and Maui. There are petroglyphs and other points of interest to explore. Because Shipwreck Beach is so remote, you expect pristine beaches and much of it is. With the naked eye, it is just a blip on the horizon. With a zoom lens, it is an abandoned Navy Fuel Tanker Barge (no engines) scuttled on the offshore reef. You can see that the ship is rotting and eventually will just be a pile of decaying debris on the sea floor.
