The small white or pinkish flowers are regular and perfect, borne in long narrow clustered racemes near the ends of twigs, soon coming to be at the bases of twigs of the season; the individual flower-stalks are subtended by nar- row pointed bracts and bear two smaller bracts near the base of the flower; the flowers open in June or July and have 5 equal se- pals about I mm. long, 5 much longer pointed petals, 5 stamens somewhat shorter than the petals and alternate with them, a 2-ceUed ovary with a short style and 2 short stigmas.
