Tapping the Cornea-—-This operation is very useful in somecases of staphyloma and ulceration of the cornea where healingis prolonged. It is very simple, and, if done carefully underaseptic precautions, need give rise to no bad results ; the objectis to relieve the tension produced on the cornea by the aqueoushumour, and to thus facilitate the commencement of the healingprocess. It may have to be done two or three times at shortintervals. After the thorough application of cocaine or eucainesolution and some solution of boracic acid or chinosol as anantiseptic, the patients head is held firmly by an assistant andthe lids forced gently apart by the forefinger and thumb or by. Fie. speculum (Bowmans). a speculum. The operator then plunges a bayonet-pointed orbroad-bladed needle through the cornea at its outer margin, and, whilst the thin part of the blade of the needle is in thewound, applies gentle pressure upon the eyeball so as to forceout a quantity of the aqueous humour. The needle is with-drawn, and the cornea carefully wiped with boric acid must be taken to keep the needle in a directionapproximately parallel with the cornea and to avoid injuringthe other side of the eyeball, the lens, or the iris. Operation for Staphyloma.—Staphyloma of the cornea issometimes conveniently treated by ligature of the protrudingportion. For this purpose a very fine thread of silk is passed STRABISMUS. 71 over the staphyloma, carefully drawn just sufficiently tight toact as a ligature without cutting into the protruding part, andleft in that position for one or two days, when the staphylomais excised.
