Chattering children in homemade fancy dress wait, probably in Wakefield Road, for the signal to walk on in the procession held on 6 May 1935 to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of King George V at Denby Dale in West Yorkshire, England, UK.

Denby Dale, West Yorkshire, England, UK: excited children in fancy dress costume stand laughing and chattering as they wait in a street strung with bunting to be told to walk on in the Silver Jubilee Day procession held on 6 May 1935 to celebrate King George V’s 25 years on the throne. Many of the youngsters wear inventive homemade outfits including Arab-style headscarfs and frilly bonnets. They include a diminutive drummer boy, a little girl holding a triangular road sign and others carrying pom-poms and parasols. George V (1865-1936), King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, reigned from 6 May 1910 until his death on 20 January 1936, just over eight months after the Jubilee. He was succeeded by his son, Edward VIII (abdicated 1936) and then by Edward’s brother, George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022). The festivities throughout the United Kingdom on Monday 6 May 1935 were the first ever Silver Jubilee celebrations of any British monarch. The national holiday began with a carriage procession and thanksgiving service in London and celebrations in individual towns and cities included garden parties, pageants and sports events. Denby Dale is a large village and civil parish in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees. It lies 10 miles south-east of Huddersfield and nine miles north-west of Barnsley. This is a square sepia detail of a monochrome photograph taken by a Yorkshire married couple, George and Kathleen Blenkhorn, and probably shows Wakefield Road, the A636 main route through the village. The image has been scanned direct from an original print in a Blenkhorn family album.
