This singular-looking caterpillar is frequently found onplum-trees, devouring the leaves; it is also found on maple,oak, and probably other trees, and on strawberry-vines. Itis about seven-tenths of an inch long (see Fig. 176), of agrayish color, with dusky and blackishstreaks. On the hinder part of the fifth Fig. are two long, curved, fleshy hornsextending forward, and on the sixth segmentthere is a similar pair curving head is spotted with brown. There aretwo short brown tubercles on the posteriorpart of the fourth segment, and two smallgray warts on each of the segments behind, those on theeleventh being most prominent. It may be found during thefirst half of June, and sometimes later. During the latterpart of the month it constructs a slight cocoon composedof pieces of leaves fastened together with silken threads, andwithin this enclosure changes to a reddish-gray or pale-brown
