Types of stem cell, artwork. Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that can produce other types of cell when they divide. There are three main types in mammals: embryonic stem cells, derived from blastocysts; adult stem cells, which are found in adult tissues; and cord blood stem cells, which are found in the umbilical cord. Here, the stem cells develop from a totipotent stage in a morula (top left) to a blastocyst (upper centre). The pluripotent inner cell mass is harvested (third stage) and cultured in a petri dish (fourth and fifth stages). At bottom, they have differentiated into three cell types (left to right): nerve cell, liver cells, and red blood cells.
