Weather station in Swedish Lapland. Instruments contained in this white Stevenson screen measure atmospheric pressure, temperature and humidity, and also hours of sunshine (using the Campbell- Stokes recorder on top of the station). Manual readings were made from this station every three hours between 0700 and 2200, between 1947 and 1965. Since then measurements have been automated. These data are used to measure the mass balance of surrounding glaciers. This is the difference between snow accumulation and meltwater run-off, and provides information on climate change. Photographed at Tarfala, where measurement of the nearby Storglaciaren glacier began in 1945, making it the world's longest mass balance record. Photographed in April 2006.
