View SW of Capel-y-ffin monastery, Llanthony, Powys, Wales, UK: ruined Abbey Church (L), monastery quadrangle (centre) & statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the forecourt (R). The main monastery buildings have been run as the Grange Trekking Centre since 1957, the ruined church, statue & wayside Calvary are in the care of The Father Ignatius Memorial Trust. On March 17th 1870 Father Ignatius of Jesus (Joseph Leycester Lyne) laid the foundation stone of his monastery, which he ran for over thirty years. He died in 1908 at his sister's house in Camberley, Surrey, & is buried within the Abbey church. The statue & Calvary commemorate at least four apparitions of the BVM which were witnessed in the meadow below the monastery during August & September 1880. From 1924-28 the stone sculptor Eric Gill & colleagues lived & worked in the former monastery complex.
