Zaandam, Holland. The so-called Pixel Poort Bicycle Tunnel with cyclists commuting between Amsterdam and Zaandam. Netherlands.
Design: Reinder Bakker, Hester van Dijk, Maartje Dros en Eric Klarenbeek. The 280m long tunnel connects the city of Zaandam with the ferry to Amsterdam. Local residents provided the design team with small drawings, illustrating what they were most proud of in their region, through a dedicated website. The pixels were then translated into ceramic tiles, a traditional Dutch art form and strong cultural symbol.
