Glenn Seaborg. Portrait of Glenn Theodore Seaborg (1912-1999), American physicist, chemist and discoverer of nine transuranic elements. Trans- uranic elements are man-made radioactive chemicals which are heavier than uranium, the heaviest, naturally-occuring element. Seaborg isolated plutonium-239 in 1941; he discovered that this and uranium-235 could be used to make an atomic bomb. Seaborg's laboratory produced the plutonium-239 needed for the first atomic bomb. In 1944 he produced americium and curium and later discovered several more. Seaborg shared the 1951 Nobel chemistry prize with E. McMillan. Photograph taken in the 1940s.
