In 1626 Tienponts successor, PeterMinuit, a German, born at Wesel, wasappointed Director-General of New Neth-erland. He bought of the Indians, forthe sum of twenty-four dollars, the entire 1626] NEW NETHERLAXD. 171 island of Manhattan, and a fort called NewAmsterdam was built. The State of NewYork dates its beginning from this trans-action. By their usually honest dealing with thenatives the Dutch settlers gained the.
